Chris Brown, Soulja Boy, Bow Wow

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I hate to rub it in, but I had a really good seat for Chris Brown’s concert. How good? Put it this way: The self-proclaimed “Prince of R&B” wore Fruit of the Looms. With a gray waistband, your slightly uncomfortable reviewer might add. Then again, this was the Up Close and Personal Tour.I also was close enough to ascertain that Brown, 18, lip-synced many of his vocals Sunday night at The Q in Cleveland. There was no faking his phenomenal choreography, however, which probably left him too winded to sing much anyway.

If anyone else in the three-quarters-full arena noticed the put-on, nobody protested. Audiences these days are willing to overlook a less-than-live performance, as long as the overall entertainment value is there.

On that count, no corners were cut by Brown, depicted as a sci-fi superhero in a pre-show cartoon. No sooner had he rescued a damsel in distress than Brown appeared in the flesh, decked out in spy gear as he was lowered on wires from the rafters, shades of Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible.”

A high-octane version of “Wall to Wall” got the party started, followed in short order by “Gimme That,” “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)”, “With You” and other postcards from Brown’s frequent visits to the top of the charts.

The greatest strengths of this precocious song-and-dance man from Tappahannock, Va., weren’t his fairly cookie-cutter songs, but his elaborate dance routines.

One particularly memorable production number featured the elastic-limbed Brown and his troupe of dancers in a break-dance battle of the sexes. Think “West Side Story” meets “Beat Street.”

Later, Brown and two sidekicks relocated to the rear of the venue, where they gyrated on a rotating and tilting secondary stage.

Throughout the proceedings, Brown jettisoned various items of clothing. This led to at least one catfight among several young women, each of whom stubbornly refused to let go of Brown’s shirt until a security guard mediated.

Brown’s 90-minute show culminated with a fun rendition of “Shortie like Mine,” featuring tour co-headliner Bow Wow (real name: Shad Moss), the Columbus-bred rapper.

During his own set, Bow Wow, 20, crammed an overview of his career into 55 action-packed minutes, ranging from “Bow Wow (That’s My Name)” (a hit in 2000, back when he was known as Lil’ Bow Wow) to slightly more mature material from his latest album, “Face Off,” a joint effort with Omarion.

Like Brown, Bow Wow also seemed to rely heavily on prerecorded vocals, with impunity.

Also on the bill were Shop Boyz and Soulja Boy, who got the crowd’s blood pumping with “Party like a Rockstar” and “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” respectively.

Soulja Boy VS GZA

Soulja Boy VS GZA
In a recent interview, Soulja Boy Tell Em took some time to address a recent attack by Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA. During a performance in London, the Genius and a boisterous crowd of fans expressed some discontent with Soulja Boy, 50 Cent and MTV.

The Genius acted as crowd motivator as fans screamed “F— Soulja Boy” into his microphone. Mr. Crank That responded to GZA’s rant and dismissed any thoughts of putting the beef on wax. “I wouldn’t even rap against the Genius. I’d put up someone who was born in ‘66 to go against the Genius so it can be a tie,” Soulja Boy told Rhapsody. “He’s got like 50 years on me. I wouldn’t even associate with the Genius. [In the video] he was looking like I stole his money or something.”

The 17-year-old rap star and other “ringtone rappers” have been under attack ever since Nas’ ‘Hip Hop is Dead’ movement, which shuns pop-rap acts like Soulja Boy. Some acts have responded to the backlash of their commercial buzz with claims that other rappers are simply jealous of their popularity.

“I ain’t gonna be like “F— the GZA” ’cause I ain’t never met that dude,” Soulja Boy said. “But he says, ‘F— Soulja Boy’ ’cause he needed a buzz.

Soulja Boy Claims He’s The Hottest MC In the Game — Better Than Jay-Z, Kanye …

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Soulja Boy Tell’em’s career is growing by leaps and bounds. One day he put a song called “Crank That” onto the Net, and months later, he’s breaking digital-download records to the tune of 3 million sold.

Now the upstart teen rapper has his eyes on the MTV News hip-hop brain trust’s “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. The next list is on the way soon.

Six months ago, however, when the top 10 was unveiled, SB was only bubbling beneath the surface as his catchy dance number was just breaking through before it eventually turned into a pop phenomenon. But now that he’s got his chops up — including a Grammy nod for Best Rap Song — the Southern rhyme-spitter thinks he’s deserving of a place alongside top-five MCs like Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Actually, he thinks he the #1 slot suits him in particular.

“I think if y’all did it right now, yeah, I deserve to be on there,” SB told MTV News last week. “But back there, when y’all did it, I probably didn’t have the status that I have right now.

“I’m Grammy-nominated,” he continued, citing his credentials. “If I look at the new list and I compare myself to all 10 of the artists and some don’t add up, I’ll be like, ‘Wow. I should be #1 if it’s right now. I’m #1.”

Soulja Boy was more candid when asked how he ranks specifically against alumni of the first Hottest MCs list, like Weezy, ‘Ye and Jay-Z.

“Right now, yes [I'm hotter than them],” he answered as their names were read to him one by one.

He said he is the best-selling online, highest-ranking on the Web and the most publicized rapper worldwide right now.

“Today, January — whatever the date this is — 2008, yes [I am the hottest],” SB emphasized.

While Soulja Boy fully believes in himself, critics say his “ringtone” raps are a part of the problem plaguing hip-hop’s lyrical creativity. However, some pretty big heavyweights from 50 Cent to Nas have co-signed on the young rapper. Soulja Boy also said Busta Rhymes has reached out to work with him. But SB said to give him three or four more years to get his focus on being more lyrical in his tracks.

In the meantime, he sees himself as a pioneer of sorts, opening the door for do-it-yourself acts and artists set on making big dance tracks.

“They’ll say I opened up a lot of doors for people,” Soulja Boy explained. “The first person who started this, what we call hip-hop, opened the door for me. It probably wasn’t a party track or a ‘Crank That,’ it probably was something way, way, way different than what I’m talking about, but he still opened the door for what I’m doing, and if I never would have did this, [the next] wouldn’t come.”

Ludacris & Soulja Boy - Super Bowl Week

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Tom Petty may be the official Super Bowl halftime performer but the week leading up to the big game will feature plenty of other performers and Ludacris will be among them. The 30-year-old rapper has been selected to perform at ESPN The Magazine’s Next party Feb. 1, which will highlight future trends in sports, technology and lifestyle.

The Super Bowl is Feb. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

“(It) feels good to be back in Arizona,” said Ludacris in a statement. “Phoenix is the hometown of my artist Willie Northpole so it’s only right to bring ‘Disturbing Tha Peace’ back home.”

Soulja Boy Tell’em, whose “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” was one of last year’s biggest hits and dance crazes, will be holding a dance challenge featuring athletes at an ESPN the magazine event Feb. 2.

Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5 will perform at “The VH1 Pepsi Smash Superbowl Bash” on Jan. 31; the concert will air on the cable network Feb. 2.
